Think Protein!

Since we are still on the tail end of the "low fat era", let me begin by saying that all fat is not bad.  In fact, we must consume fat for our bodies to function properly.  Here's the secret, you must choose beneficial fats.  Most of you have heard that you should use vegetable and canola oil, but I disagree.  These oils have been chemically pressed which defeats the purpose.  I recommend Extra Virgin Olive Oil which is the first "cold press".  This gives beneficial omega 9 which is a first cousin to the best omega 3.

The other very important thing you need to remember is never eat a carbohydrate without a protein.  This goes for good carbs as well such as fresh fruits and veggies.  These good carbs will raise your blood glucose(sugar) level just like bad carbs do.  Protein on the otherhand, gives a slower, blunted rise in glucose. So before you eat those yummy looking strawberries, eat a handful of almonds or a chunk of natural cheese.

It's OK to eat protein by itself.  Some choices of good proteins snacks are: almonds, walnuts, pistachios, cashews, filberts, pecans (and occassionally peanuts), natural peanut and almond butter, natural milk and cheese.
